Brew Crew

Dave Fougeron

Dave was born and raised in Houston, Texas amongst heat, humidity and plenty of mosquitoes.  He encountered his first homebrew one dark and stormy night in 1989, and the seeds of intrigue were planted.  Dave began home brewing in 1993 in College Station, Texas while attending Texas A&M University winning several medals in local home brew competitions.  After graduation Dave took his first “real” job in 1997 as an assistant brewer at the renowned Saint Arnold Brewing Company, eventually becoming the head brewer in 2001. Six years later, he left to form Southern Star Brewing.

Dave is heavily influenced by the brewing styles and traditions of England and Germany, although has been know to enjoy an IPA or two.  He also likes to read literature, go fishing, and take long, romantic walks on the beach.

Jason Gutierrez

Born and raised in San Jose, CA and like most brewers I started off home brewing which led to an even bigger passion, fascination, and love for all things craft beer. After immersing myself in the local craft beer scene and working for The Beer Connoisseur Magazine, which enabled me to meet many brewers and brewery reps in the area, I got the opportunity to help out on a brew day at Firehouse Grill & Brewery in Sunnyvale, CA in the summer of 2010. This was the start of a journey that would change my life forever.

Under the tutelage of 4-time consecutive GABF winner and brewmaster Steve Donohue, I was given the opportunity to work and learn the ins and outs of a working brewery, as well as been part of creating award winning beers. In March of 2012 it was time for me to take the next step in my brewing career which brought me to Southern Star Brewing Co. My goal is to bring West Coast styles and flavors to the great state of Texas, and help educate the people what craft beer is all about. I love and appreciate all styles but being from CA, of course I am a total Hop Head and love big IPAs. I would love to start a barrel program offering a variety of different barrel aged beers, i.e. stouts, porters, sours, etc; as well as a session program, offering big flavorful beers with a low alcohol. So many possibilities, and so many great things to look forward to. CHEERS!!!!
